What La Jolla does to a window
La Jolla sits on a headland that sticks out into the Pacific, and almost every house is built to look at it. The homes along Coast Boulevard, Camino de la Costa in Bird Rock, Neptune Place at Windansea and La Jolla Farms above Black’s Beach take the ocean spray directly, and the salt dries on the west-facing glass as a white haze within two or three weeks of a clean. Up the hill in Muirlands, Country Club, Hidden Valley and the streets around Mount Soledad the salt arrives more slowly, carried in by the marine layer that sits over the Village most mornings from May through July, but it still arrives, and it shows the moment the afternoon sun comes in low off the water.
The salt is only half of it. La Jolla water is as hard as the rest of San Diego, and the irrigation on the larger lots in La Jolla Farms, Muirlands and around the La Jolla Country Club fairways leaves hard mineral spots along the lower panes every morning it runs. Salt air also corrodes aluminum and steel frames, and the white powder it leaves on the sills gets dragged across the glass by the wind. The Torrey pines and eucalyptus in La Jolla Shores and along Hidden Valley Road drop needles, bark and a sticky residue into the gutters and onto the skylights, and in the fall the Santa Anas add a layer of fine dust to all of it.

Can you clean the glass railings and the big view windows over the water?
Yes. Most oceanfront homes in La Jolla have frameless glass railings on the decks and a wall of glass facing the water over a slope, and we clean both sides of the railings and reach the view glass with water-fed poles from the ground or the deck. Tell us the number of stories on the water side on the quote form so we bring the right equipment.
Does salt air damage the glass if it is left alone?
Over time, yes. Salt film holds moisture against the glass and the frames, and left for months on the west-facing windows of Bird Rock or La Jolla Shores it can etch the surface and corrode the aluminum. Regular cleaning takes the salt off before it does damage, and we wipe the frames and tracks on every visit.
