What Del Mar and Rancho Santa Fe do to a window
Del Mar and Solana Beach sit on the bluffs above the Pacific, and the breeze that makes the afternoons pleasant carries salt onto the glass of every home between the beach and Interstate 5. The Beach Colony and the Camino del Mar bluffs in Olde Del Mar take it directly, and the salt dries on the west-facing windows as a white haze in two or three weeks. Del Mar Heights, Lomas Santa Fe and the Isla Verde and Highland streets of Solana Beach get it by way of the marine layer, which sits on the coast most mornings from May through July and leaves a damp salt film behind when it burns off. The San Dieguito and San Elijo lagoons add a second kind of moisture to the glass near them.
Five miles inland the problem changes. Rancho Santa Fe was planted with eucalyptus a century ago, and the trees in The Covenant, along Paseo Delicias and El Camino del Norte and through Rancho Santa Fe Farms drop leaves, bark and a sticky residue onto glass, skylights and gutters all year. The lots are big, the irrigation runs every morning on very hard water, and the lower panes on the yard side frost with mineral spots over a summer. Fairbanks Ranch and the homes around the Del Mar Country Club and Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club fairways get the overspray from the course as well. In the fall the Santa Anas come down the San Dieguito valley and put a brown dust on everything.
Oceanfront and bluff homes in the Beach Colony, Olde Del Mar and along the Solana Beach bluffs do best every month or two, with quarterly the rest of the year. Rancho Santa Fe homes in The Covenant, Fairbanks Ranch and the Farms are fine on a quarterly plan, often with a visit after the Santa Anas, and the inside glass done once a year. These are large houses with a lot of glass, courtyards, clerestories and view walls, and we clean them with water-fed poles and ladders where needed. Can you get the eucalyptus residue and sprinkler spots off the glass?
Yes. The eucalyptus in Rancho Santa Fe leaves a sticky film that a hose will not move, and it comes off with the regular clean. Sprinkler spots are different: very hard water that hits the same lower panes every morning leaves mineral deposits that need a dedicated treatment. Point them out on the quote form and we will assess them on the first visit.
